oops

Every so often in life there is that moment when your stomach sinks and realization waxes bright as it dawns on you that what you just did can't be undone. First you feel sick, then ridiculously stupid, and then finally, just as the self deprecation is easing up, the depression settles in as you reconcile yourself with the irrevocable consequences of what just happened. The "oops" moment. Trivial and, in the scheme of eternity, inconsequential as it may be, it is still rough on the psyche and difficult to digest. You know you must move on, but all you can dream about is a time machine that could take you back to that brain freeze moment, with the express purpose of injecting a little common sense into your thick headed skull.

On Wednesday, I became reacquainted with that moment.

As the evidence shows, I wielded a pair of scissors with reckless disregard to the consequences, shearing my child and leaving her looking like a very pretty little boy.

Why? That's the logical question, but the one for which I have no answers.

How do I feel? Let's just put it this way. The knowledge that hair grows has only partially alleviated my regret.

Such are the little vicissitudes of life.

Just someone who follows your blog. What I want to see is the picture of your pretty little boy!

I agree! I would love to see a picture! I bet she's adorable & it will grow back in time! I can imagine how you feel, though, looking at those pretty curls! Hopefully the haircut will grow on you!

Break out the "after" pictures Angie as it seems all of us curious minds want to see. I am glad it grows back too but I just LOVED that girls curls!! Maybe I should give you my phone # in case you get the urge again, you can let me talk you out of it:) Marianna is too cute to let a few curls spoil her beauty. My first thought was she got ahold of the scissors and did the deed as all of them seem to do as a toddler right of passage. I love you girl and it's all good.

Love and Hugs, Laurie

I totally just did the same thing in December. I took my blonde curly headed baby to the girl that cuts my hair. She was two and had never had a single hair cut off her head. (you can see the before and after on my blog if you are interested).

I wasn't terribly consoled with the "hair will grow" thing either.

But I have to say that only about 6 weeks later, I don't regret it. Her hair is easier to manage, the curls are bouncier, and it just looks more healthy. In our case it is also making it grow more evenly instead of being much longer in the back.

After a few days it will get better. And in a few weeks it will be MUCH better. Even if it does make them look more grown up.

Ok we need to see pictures!

To make you feel a little better...when I was about 2 my mom asked my father to take me to have my bangs trimmed. He took me to a barber shop where they cut them all off, leaving just a bit of fringe on top!

The bad haircut seems to be a requirement of childhood. :)

Oh, Angie. I just did the same thing to Mallorie, in the hospital (though I am sure yours can't be as bad as mine turned out ... Mallorie is almost "waxed" in the front and really short in the back. My excuse was first making it easier for a scalp IV, but the back .... ? I have no excuse.

Angie that is hilarious I couldn't help but laugh. I saw it on your facebook that you cut a lot off but wow that looks like a lot of hair. Yeah I agree with everyone we need pictures woman. My sister in law did this last week to my niece and she was so upset. I'll send her to your blog so y'all can console each other.

I'm sure it isn't THAT bad. But, even if it is "that bad", at least thanks to blogging you have some documentation. So, when she is 25 looking back at "old pictures" and says "Mom, what were you thinking?!" you can laugh and say, "Look, I was wondering the exact same thing!" Hair does grow back and I'm sure it looks better than you think :o)

I've had that sensation with my own hair, I can imagine the disappointment with your daughter is all the more poignant. What does she say about it? Take comfort in knowing it's got to be longer than Norah's hair- she is starting to look like a monk these days with a bit of a mullet. :) (you're an excellent writer- described all the sensations beautifully!) :)

Angie we've all done it. My oldest had the shortest bangs without being spiked when she was little. And last summer I was sure I could buzz my sons head on my own, lets just say he looked like a skin head. Hair does grow and thank the Lord relatively fast. Marianna so adorable I'm sure she looks cute

What funny memories this post stirs in me . . . I for some unknown reason, started cutting guys' hair in college. One time, I had a big Baylor football player in my kitchen chair, and I cut into the top of his ear!*! Boy, did it bleed!!! It was just a little snip, but you know how head wounds are! Needless to say, he didn't ever ask me to cut his hair again :) So in my book, you've had a successful haircut, with NO BLOOD! Now since then, I've gotten a little better, and have cut my husband's and 3 boys hair for over 20 yrs. Curly hair is SOOOOOOO much easier to cut than really straight hair! Straight hair shows the cut marks much more and is very unforgiving in getting it even and cutting a straight line! I had 2 little boys with curls and the last one had the straight hair-haha!

Angie, I did the very same thing to Brandi.
