What are the odds?

Marianna is a lefty. 100%, totally, without exception, she uses her left hand for everything. Even from a young age Marianna's preference was pronounced. Never would she color or use a spoon with her right hand, even if that is the hand I held it to. She would grab with her right, switch to her left, and proceed as normal. But what in the world are the odds of Adrienne following in her sister's footsteps? I have no idea what the odds are, but the liklihood of it happening appears to be about 100%.

I've noticed some telltale signs, but this morning I conducted what I consider to be the ultimate test. Adrienne was coloring with her left hand. I took the crayon away and put it in her right hand. Adrienne looked up at me, stared me in the eyes for a second, switched the crayon back to her left, and continued as normal. Exactly like her sister.

Two lefties. How weird is that?

We have 3 biological children and l adopted child. One of our biological children is left handed and so is our adopted son. I would be interested in knowing how many adopted children are left handed. All of the adopted children I know are left handed. What are the odds of that? Also, can you tell me the name or maker of the bed you got for Marianna on craigs list? It is precious.

That is too funny! :)

How fun! I'm the only one of 4 who is left handed... but my grandma and uncle are left handed.

It will be special for Adrienne to have that common connection with her sister!

You know what though... it took me 8 years to learn how to tie my shoes. My right handed parents COULD NOT teach me. When a little girl moved in next door and was also left handed, she taught me in a day! Hehe.

Of our 3 sons, 2 are left handed. My hubby and I are both right handed. It has no rhyme or reason!

That is really interesting...I haven't done any study on this trait and would be curious to know what the studies say. I have one cousin who is left-handed, but so is her dad. So, I always kind of thought it hereditary, but in reading your post I thought maybe it was more related to what you see/learn from your family, and then read the comment about two left-handed kids born to two right-handed parents...hmm, very interesting!

Interesting you posted about this. We are almost positive our three year old daughter is left handed and were just beginning to think our two year old son is doing the same thing and seems to prefer doing things as a lefty as well- I wondered what the odds were of having two lefties- maybe they are higher than I thought!?

The odds of two siblings being lefties, not so unusual, but Marianna and Adrienne - that's unusual!

Well, just think, you'll have to buy leftie scissors and stuff anyways, at least it'll get plenty of use!

Lefties (in my opinion, and that of my mom a Learning Disabilities Therapist) tend to be more creative, musical, artistic, etc. Sounds like you have lots of music lessons, art supplies, and imagination in your future!

We have four children, three boys and one girl. The three boys are all lefties and our daugther is right handed. Interesting thing is neither my husband nor I are left handed. One of our boys is left handed, but plays baseball right handed and a couple of them golf right handed. Very interesting!

I've loved reading all of the comments, and hearing other stories of multiple lefties! Now it makes me want to research and find out more.

And yes, for someone who asked, the bunk beds are still sold by a company called tradewins. I know it is available on amazon, among other places.

Being left handed is a genetic trait. It's recessive, just like thumb dominance, being able to roll your tongue, and other weird things. My great grandmother was left handed. I'm the only one since her. Being left handed, while there are still far less lefties than righties, is slightly more common than it used to be because people used to be forced to use their right hand. I can remember in the second grade my teacher trying to force me to write with my right hand.
It is cool that she will share that with Marianna though.

How fascinating! I was the only lefty in my family for years, until my sister's 3rd child turned out to be a lefty. She's 5 now. What's even cuter is that she is also the child who looks most like me and also has a very similar personality to mine.

I have four children and three are left handed. Neither my husband or I are left handed. My mohter is ambidexterous, but no one other than that. Our pediatrician said hhat these beat all the odds! Its fun having so many lefties in the house! although I have to have my mom teach them some things, like tying shoes and crochetting.
Good luck

We have three children. My two girls are lefties, as am I. My son has been a dominant right-hander from the very beginning, even though he's the youngest and could have followed the lead of his very bossy sisters. He instead followed his daddy, who is a rightie. : ) Interesting post and comments today!

I'm a lefty too...and despite my best efforts, I'm pretty sure all my kiddos are rightys. ;) You know what they say...left handed people are the only people in their right minds! ;P

I finally made it over to your blog and to meet Poppy Joy and the rest of your precious family. So glad I did. Your hair loss story made me laugh. I always lost hair after having babies too. Since turning thirty and having my last baby my skin looks like a teen ager again! I can't figure it out but I'm blaming hormones shifting or something. It sucks to have crows feet and acne! :) I hope your hair decides to stay put at least for several more decades.

I have 2 children, both boys, who are left-handed and have always been so. They have different fathers (My first son's father and I divorced after 10 yrs marriage). Their fathers and I are right-handed. What are the odds? I would like to know too.
